Writing Place and Play

Snow shadows

Readers, hi! I’ve made a few changes around floWord and wanted to let you know what they are and why. I also have some questions for you below.

First, the changes. You’ll see that I changed how I categorize my posts (look to the Categories menu on the right for new post categories). I also changed the blog’s tagline to “writing place and play,” which I think summarizes the major themes of what I’m up to here.

This makeover was prompted because I’ve been at this blogging role for 11 months now, and I wanted to check in with my purpose for doing it. I recently shared a post called “Why I Write.” It seemed natural to also consider, why do I blog?

I do it for a few reasons. First, I have earnest writing goals, and I want readers of my print publications to be able to find a range of my writing online. This is a place for me to explore the subjects that most often cross my writer radar–topics like place, environment, and nature–and I hope that new readers with these interests will find me. (Speaking of new readers, I invite you to please share any of my posts that you particularly like, or that you think someone else might particularly like.)

But the blog also presents an opportunity for me to flex my writing muscles with new challenges and tones that I’d like to explore more, but that I don’t always develop in my other work. This is why I try to have some fun with playful prompts and attempts (successful or not!) at writing humor. I also certainly hope the posts in the “Humor/Play” category have some degree of entertainment value for readers.

Finally, this blog keeps me accountable to doing writing. It gives me a good reason for writing, something, on a regular basis–even if I’m just playing with a new idea or responding to a writing exercise prompt.

Of course, now that I’ve written all these sentences about what “this blog” does–I realize it’s not the blog that helps me. It’s the fact that there are readers of this blog! It’s you. As they always say, writers need readers.

Thank you so much for being here.

Now that I’ve made these changes, I’d love to hear from you–are there categories of posts that you typically enjoy? On which categories would you like to hear more from me? Any other ideas or feedback? Feel free to leave me a comment below.

I would certainly appreciate any of your thoughts. Like all of us, this place is a work in progress.

  1. I love all of your posts! It is hard to chose a favorite category. However, when this blog become famous do you think you could maybe have a romance novel category that i could contribute to from time to time?

  2. Lauren, You are an awesome writer. I enjoy almost everything you write. However you wish to express what is going on in your head, please feel free to do so. Thank you for asking though!
